The Art of Noticing

Observing familiar landscapes through light, atmosphere, and presence

Marcus Cherrill’s paintings are rooted in close observation of familiar landscapes along the Sussex coast and South Downs — places that are widely known, walked and photographed.

Rather than seeking spectacle, his work focuses on the quieter act of noticing: subtle shifts in light, atmosphere and movement that emerge through repeated encounters with the same locations.

By slowing the pace of looking, these paintings invite the viewer to experience well-known places anew — not as landmarks, but as lived, atmospheric spaces shaped by time, weather and presence.

Sustained bodies of work exploring place, light and movement
