A young girl stands quietly in the shallows of Lake Windermere, looking down as the water ripples around her feet. The small figure is held within an expanse of cool blue water and sky, with the distant shoreline providing little more than a dark horizontal divide. Her reflection, softened and broken by the movement of the lake, becomes as important to the composition as the figure herself.
Watching the Ripples is a painting about a small, absorbed moment — the simple fascination of standing in water and watching its surface change around you. The restrained palette and open space give the scene a sense of calm and distance, while the young girl provides its quiet human focus.
