Inside Belle Tout, a small arched window sits within the thick flint walls of the lighthouse tower. The glass itself is only around 30cm high, yet the depth of the surround and the weight of the stonework make it feel almost monumental.
Painted following a rare opportunity to explore the lighthouse, I was drawn to this unexpected interior view: the cool, textured walls, the deep shadow around the window and the soft light entering from outside. With almost nothing visible beyond the glass, the painting is as much about the structure and stillness of the tower as the view from it.
