Series: Coastal Balance
Painted from the Sussex coast during the brief period each year when the setting sun aligns behind Belle Tout Lighthouse, this work captures the last light spreading across the horizon and the rolling downland above the cliffs.
The painting focuses on the meeting of land, sea and sky as evening light softens the landscape. Warm tones along the horizon contrast with the cooler colours of the coast, creating a sense of balance and stillness at the end of the day.
This particular alignment of season, location and light has inspired a number of larger and smaller works, offering a recurring opportunity to explore the changing relationship between the South Downs, the sea and the setting sun.
