Brighton’s West Pier has been part of my visual landscape for as long as I can remember. Growing up seeing it gradually fall into disrepair, then witnessing the damage caused by storms and the devastating fires, I have watched it change from a familiar landmark into the fragile skeletal structure that remains today.
In Still Standing, the pier is held against a softly luminous sky, its dark, delicate ironwork contrasting with the warmth and atmosphere around it and the movement of the sea below. There is something both vulnerable and remarkably resilient about what remains — battered by weather, fire and time, but still unmistakably present on the Brighton horizon.
