Horses running at sunrise at Diamond Cross Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. What first caught my attention was the extraordinary contrast of light and dark: the almost silhouetted bodies of the horses against the early sunlight breaking through between their legs, and the dust thrown into the light as they move.Rather than concentrating on individual horses, I wanted the painting to capture that collision of movement, light and shadow — cropped closely so that legs, bodies and dust merge into an almost abstract pattern.Painted with the kind permission of photographer Jim Scott, whose original photograph provided the reference for the work.
