Series: Coastal Balance
Inspired by the group beach ride at Normans Bay on 16 May, Riders at Low Tide captures a procession of horses and riders moving quietly across the tidal flats beneath a changing evening sky. Organised by Coakham Bloodhounds, the event drew riders, supporters and spectators along the shoreline, creating a striking moment of movement, atmosphere and shared experience on the Sussex coast.
Painted in acrylic on canvas, the work focuses on reflection, distance and restraint. Softened edges, layered glazes and muted coastal tones allow the figures to emerge gradually from the landscape, balancing human presence with the openness of sea, sky and wet sand.
Rather than documenting a specific moment in detail, the painting reflects the calm rhythm and atmosphere of the evening — the sound of water and horses, the shifting light and the quiet procession across the shoreline at low tide.
