Series: Downland Light
A view towards Kingston Ridge in early summer, where a scattering of poppies brings colour to the fields beneath the South Downs. The ridge forms a strong horizontal presence across the landscape, its gentle contours defining the horizon beyond the foreground field.
Part of a small group of paintings within the Downland Light series that explore the seasonal character of the Sussex landscape, this work focuses on the brief appearance of poppies across the Downs. Their vibrant reds provide a striking contrast to the softer greens and muted tones of the surrounding fields, marking a fleeting moment in the changing seasons.
Painted in response to the early summer landscape of the Ouse Valley, the work captures the light, atmosphere and quiet beauty of this familiar stretch of downland.
