Series: Downland Light

Painted from the slopes below Beddingham Hill, this work looks across the Sussex landscape towards Mount Caburn, capturing the distinctive patterns created by harvested fields, rolling downland and changing summer light.

Part of the Downland Light series, From Beddingham Hill explores the relationship between the managed landscape and the natural forms of the South Downs. The rhythmic arrangement of hay bales creates a visual pathway through the composition, echoing the contours and chalk scars of the distant hills while drawing the eye towards the horizon.

Although inspired by a specific location and season, the painting is less concerned with topographical accuracy than with atmosphere and structure. The interplay of diagonals, repeating shapes and subtle shifts in colour creates a sense of movement across the landscape, while the expansive sky reflects the ever-changing weather that characterises the Sussex Downs.

Through simplified forms and layered colour, the work celebrates the quiet beauty of the agricultural landscape and the enduring connection between farming, seasonality and place.
