Inspired by the Coakham Bloodhounds beach ride at Normans Bay, Following the Appaloosa captures a group of horses and riders moving along the shoreline beneath a soft evening sky.

Part of the Coastal Balance series, the painting explores movement, companionship and the shared experience of travelling through the landscape. The distinctive Appaloosa horse becomes a natural focal point within the composition, drawing the eye through the group while remaining part of the wider rhythm of riders, waves and reflected light.

This work forms part of a wider series inspired by the same remarkable event, which brought together more than sixty horses and riders along the Sussex coast. Related paintings include Riders at Low Tide, Across the Flats and Chasing the Afterglow, each offering a different perspective on the gathering and the unique atmosphere of the evening.

Rather than focusing on portrait-like detail, the painting seeks to convey the feeling of the ride itself — the sound of hooves on wet sand, the movement of horses against the tide and the sense of freedom that comes from being immersed in the coastal landscape. Through softened edges, layered colour and an emphasis on atmosphere, the work reflects the restorative qualities of both the sea and the companionship between horse and rider.
