A large-scale view of the Sussex coast as evening light begins to fade across sea, cliffs and sky. The chalk cliffs of Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters emerge from a landscape of deep blues, greys and muted violets, their pale forms catching the last remaining light.

Part of the Coastal Balance series, this painting explores the shifting relationship between land, sea and atmosphere. Broad passages of colour and layered glazes create a sense of depth and luminosity, allowing the landscape to emerge gradually from the changing light.

One of the largest works in the series, Evening Light, Birling Gap reflects a recurring fascination with the Sussex coastline at the close of day, when scale, light and atmosphere become more important than detail, and the boundary between sea, land and sky begins to dissolve.
