Series: Downland Light
Hidden amongst orchids and spring grasses on the chalk slopes above Cranedown Reservoir, these cowslips provided a fleeting burst of colour against the fresh greens of early May.
Part of the Downland Light series, this painting celebrates the smaller details that can easily be overlooked within the wider Sussex landscape. Rather than focusing on distant views and expansive skies, the composition draws attention to the delicate structure of the flowers and the subtle shifts of light across the hillside.
Painted in acrylic on board, the work balances observation with atmosphere, capturing both the character of the chalk downland and the quiet beauty of a brief spring moment.
