Series: Coastal Balance
Inspired by an evening ride along the shoreline at Normans Bay, Chasing the Afterglow captures a fleeting moment of movement, companionship and fading light.
Part of the Coastal Balance series, the painting explores the relationship between people, animals and the ever-changing edge between land and sea. The riders and horses move through the last warmth of the day, their forms softened by distance and atmosphere, while reflections and subtle colour shifts across the wet sand evoke the calm that follows a late spring sunset.
This painting forms part of a linked pair inspired by the Coakham Bloodhounds beach ride, a gathering that saw dozens of horses and riders travel along the Sussex coastline. While Chasing the Afterglow focuses on the energy and glow of the setting sun, its companion piece, Across the Flats, explores the wider landscape and sense of journey across the expansive shoreline. Images of the companion work can be viewed elsewhere in this gallery.
Rather than focusing on individual detail, the work seeks to convey the feeling of the moment — the rhythm of hooves, the glow of the horizon and the shared experience of being outdoors as daylight begins to fade. It is a celebration of freedom, connection and the restorative qualities of the Sussex coast.
