Series: Downland Light
A view across the Ouse Valley towards Mount Caburn, painted from a field on the lower slopes of Mill Hill between Kingston and Rodmell. In early summer, bands of flowering phacelia bring soft violet tones to the foreground, contrasting with the greens of the valley and the distinctive shape of Caburn beyond.
Part of a small group of paintings within the Downland Light series that explore the seasonal colour of the Sussex landscape, this work focuses on the way flowering crops become woven into the broader patterns of the Downs. Whether poppies, rapeseed, oxeye daisies or phacelia, these brief displays transform familiar views and mark the changing seasons across the landscape.
Unlike Above Rodmell, which looks out from the Downs ridge, this viewpoint sits lower on the valley side, looking across the Ouse towards Caburn and the surrounding downland. The painting captures the light, atmosphere and sense of place that characterise this corner of the South Downs in early summer.
