Series: Downland Light
A view of Beddingham Hill in early summer, where a band of vivid poppies cuts across the landscape beneath the rolling contours of the South Downs. The sweep of red provides a striking contrast to the surrounding greens, drawing attention to the changing colours of the season.
Part of a small group of paintings within the Downland Light series that explore the seasonal character of the Sussex landscape, this work focuses on the brief period when poppies transform familiar downland views. The simplicity of the composition emphasises the relationship between colour, light and the shape of the land itself.
Painted in response to the poppy fields that appeared across this corner of the Ouse Valley in early summer, the work captures a fleeting moment in the annual cycle of the Downs.
