Series: Downland Light
Painted after a unique opportunity to visit Belle Tout one early evening as the guest of my neighbour, who regularly stays at the lighthouse. Rather than the familiar distant view from the Downs, I wanted to capture the building from close quarters — its unusual architecture, weathered surfaces and the great lantern rising above it.
The fading light and gathering cloud gave the lighthouse a very different character: quiet, solid and slightly isolated on the clifftop, with just a few traces of warm light suggesting life within.
