Series: Downland Light
A view across the Ouse Valley towards Mount Caburn, one of the most distinctive landmarks of the eastern South Downs. Painted in early summer, bands of seasonal colour bring warmth and contrast to the landscape, while the familiar outline of Caburn rises beyond the surrounding fields.
Part of a small group of paintings within the Downland Light series that explore the seasonal character of the Sussex landscape, this work focuses on the relationship between colour, light and the broad contours of the Downs. The changing crops and wildflowers of early summer briefly transform familiar views, marking the progression of the seasons across the valley.
Painted from a viewpoint above the Ouse Valley, the work captures the openness, atmosphere and sense of place that characterise this corner of the South Downs.
