A panoramic view across the Ouse Valley in early summer, looking over one of the most colourful periods of the Sussex landscape. Bands of red poppies sweep across the foreground, while the patchwork of fields, hedgerows and distant downland recede towards the horizon.

Part of a small group of paintings within the Downland Light series that explore the seasonal colour of the South Downs, this work captures the brief period when poppies transform the landscape. The contrast between the vivid reds of the flowers and the softer greens and blues beyond creates a strong sense of depth, drawing the eye across the valley towards the distant ridges.

Painted from an elevated viewpoint above the Ouse Valley, the work celebrates the scale, light and atmosphere of the Sussex landscape at the height of early summer.
