Series: Coastal Balance

Inspired by the Coakham Bloodhounds beach ride at Normans Bay, Across the Flats captures horses and riders crossing the wide open sands beneath a luminous evening sky.

Part of the Coastal Balance series, the painting explores the sense of space, freedom and quiet connection that characterises the Sussex coast. The figures are intentionally simplified, becoming part of the broader landscape rather than its sole focus. Attention is instead drawn to the shifting light, distant headlands and the subtle reflections left behind by the receding tide.

Together with its companion piece, Chasing the Afterglow, this work forms a small series inspired by the same remarkable evening ride. While Chasing the Afterglow centres on movement and the warmth of the setting sun, Across the Flats emphasises distance, atmosphere and the shared experience of travelling through an expansive coastal landscape.
