Series: Downland Light
A view from the South Downs ridge above Rodmell, where a field of flowering phacelia brings a band of violet-blue to the summer landscape. Beyond, the patchwork of fields and rolling downland stretches towards the horizon beneath a wide Sussex sky.
Part of a small group of paintings within the Downland Light series that explore the seasonal colour of the Sussex landscape, this work focuses on the way flowering crops become woven into the broader patterns of the Downs. Whether poppies, rapeseed, oxeye daisies or phacelia, these brief displays transform familiar views and mark the changing seasons across the landscape.
Painted in early summer, the work captures the light, atmosphere and sense of space that characterise the high ridges above the Ouse Valley.
